Pioneers of Early Childhood Education

Pioneers of Early Childhood Education

$139

Early childhood education is fundamental to a child's later educational achievements and future success. The principles and practices of modern early childhood education have their origins in the past. While the educators who built the field have been the subject of many detailed studies, previous works do not provide adequate coverage of primary and secondary sources, multicultural educators, or more recent leaders in the discipline. This reference book provides biographies and annotated bibliographies of more than 30 pioneers in early childhood education from Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670) and John Locke (1632-1704), to Maria Montessori (1870-1952), Leland B. Jacobs (1907-1992), and Lillian Weber (1917-1994). Special attention is given to multicultural educators, including Mary Church Terrell (1863-1954) and her work with The National Association of Colored Women. Biographies are arranged alphabetically, and each is followed by annotated bibliographies of primary and secondary sources. An introductory essay briefly discusses the history of early childhood education from the 17th century to the present. The following biographies are arranged alphabetically, and each includes a brief summary of the subjects contributions to the field of early childhood education. Each biographical sketch is followed by annotated bibliography of primary and secondary sources, including obituaries, articles, dissertations, and books. Works were selected because they represent the most interesting and informative sources by and about the educators. The volume closes with a chronological listing of the pioneers and a selected bibliography of general works on early childhood education.

Pioneers of Jazz

Pioneers of Jazz

$24.95

Thanks to the pioneering tours of the Creole Band, jazz began to be heard nationwide on the vaudeville stages of America from 1914 to 1918. This seven-piece band toured the country, exporting for the first time the authentic jazz strains that had developed in New Orleans at the start of the 20th century. The band's vaudeville routines were deeply rooted in the minstrel shows and plantation cliches of American show business in the late 19th century, but its instrumental music was central to its performance and distinctive and entrancing to audiences and reviewers. Pioneers of Jazz reveals at long last the link between New Orleans music and the jazz phenomenon that swept America in the 1920s. While they were the first important band from New Orleans to attain national exposure, The Creole Band has not heretofore been recognized for its unique importance. But in his monumental, careful research, jazz scholar Lawrence Gushee firmly establishes the group's central role in jazz history. Gushee traces the troupe's activities and quotes the reaction of critics and audiences to their first encounters with this new musical phenomenon. While audiences, who often expected (and got) a kind of minstrel show, the group transcended expectations, taking pride in their music and facing down the theatrical establishment with courage. Although they played the West Coast and Canada, most of their touring centered in the heartland. Most towns of any size in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana heard them, often repeatedly, and virtually all of their appearances were received with wild enthusiasm. After four years of nearly incessant traveling, members of the band founded or joined groups in Chicago South Side cabaret scene, igniting the craze for hot New Orleans music for which the Windy City was renowned in the early 1920s. The best-known musicians in the group–cornetist Freddie Keppard, clarinetist Jimmy Noone and string bassist Bill Johnson–would play a significant role in jazz, becoming famous for recordings in the 1920s. Gushee effectively brings to life each member of the band and discusses their individual contributions, while analyzing the music with precision, skillful and exacting documentation. Including many never before published photos and interviews, the book also provides an invaluable and colorful look at show business, especially vaudeville, in the 1910s. While some of the first jazz historians were aware of the band's importance, attempts to locate and interview surviving members (three died before 1935) were sporadic and did little or nothing to correct the mostly erroneous accounts of the band's career. The jazz world has long known about Gushee's original work on this previously neglected subject, and the book represents an important event in jazz scholarship. Pioneers of Jazz brilliantly places this group's unique importance into a broad cultural and historical context, and provides the crucial link between jazz's

Pioneers of Electronic Music

Pioneers of Electronic Music

$13.58

New World Records’ Pioneers of Electronic Music is a repackaging of the CRI title of the same name and centers around the activity of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center founded by Vladimir Ussachevsky and Otto Luening. The designation “pioneers” in this case is a particularly apt one — these are not pioneers of techno or some other latter-day popular music involving the use of electronics, but pioneers of electronic music itself. At the Museum of Modern Art, the earliest four of these Ussachevsky and Luening pieces — Sonic Contours, Low Speed, Invention in Twelve Notes, and Fantasy in Space — were presented on October 26, 1952, in what is now adjudged as the second-ever concert of electronic music in American history. Add Incantation and you have the contents of a 10″ LP called Tape Recorder Music, released in 1955 on the Innovations label, the first commercially issued record of American electronic music and an extremely scarce item in its original form. Before finally landing on this New World CD, some or all of these selections have been released in a variety of forms, even at one point in “fake stereo.” It is good that they now have a permanent home — by right they should not ever be out of print. Listening to the early monophonic Ussachevsky and Luening tape recorder music and it is easy to underestimate what they achieved; in order for this primitive system to do its thing, one needed to have a trigger, which was generally either Ussachevsky’s piano or Luening’s flute. The flute, as it turns out, was an excellent choice, as its purity of tone was closest to the sound of a sine wave, later the basic seed of most electronic music in its next historical phase. Some may feel that Luening’s plainly Native American-derived melody in Fantasy in Space is a little cheesy; at the time, it was a good handle for those listeners who could barely consider this music. Nevertheless, the impact of these early pieces was both enormous and universal — the opening of Kraftwerk’s 1977 piece The Hall of Mirrors from the album Trans Europe Express directly references the opening of Incantation; it just so happens that Florian Schneider is also a flute player, and has designed his own equipment based on its capabilities. Although Luening’s Moonflight and Ussachevsky’s Piece for Tape Recorder originate elsewhere, the balance of the disc is taken from the two-LP CRI set Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center: Tenth Anniversary. This was a very popular electronic music album in the 1970s, and those who owned the original may have a nostalgic flashback in listening to pieces like Bülent Arel’s Stereo Electronic Music No. 2 or Pril Smiley’s Kolyosa. Mario Davidovsky’s Synchronisms No. 5 has actually managed to gain some currency as a standard repertoire item, along with several of his other Synchronisms, but none of the works was created with the intention of becoming part of the larger discipline of Western art music. These were teaching pieces an

Pioneers of Modern Design

Pioneers of Modern Design

$9.99

One of the most widely read books on modern design, Nikolaus Pevsner’s landmark work today remains as stimulating as it was when first published in 1936. This expanded edition of Pioneers of Modern Design provides Pevsner’s original text along with significant new and updated information, enhancing Pevsner’s illuminating account of the roots of Modernism. The book now offers many beautiful colour illustrations; updated biographies and bibliographies of all major figures; illustrated short essays on key themes, movements, and individuals; a critique of Pevsner’s analysis from today’s perspective; examples of works after 1914 (where the original study ended); a biography detailing Pevsner’s life and achievements; and much more. Pevsner saw Modernism as a synthesis of three main sources: William Morris and his followers, the work of nineteenth-century engineers, and Art Nouveau. The author considers the role of these sources in the work of early Modernists and looks at such masters of the movement as C.F.A. Voysey and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Britain, Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright in America, and Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner in Vienna. The account concludes with a discussion of the radical break with the past represented by the design work of Walter Gropius and his future Bauhaus colleagues. Nikolaus Pevsner (1902-1983), a distinguished scholar of art and architecture, was best known as editor of the 46-volume series The Buildings of England and as founding editor of The Pelican History of Art.

Picking the Blues: Boogie Woogie Pioneers

$12.78

British musician, bandleader, and blues historian John Mayall was tapped by the excellent jazz and blues archival label Document to dig through his record collection and present the best of the boogie-woogie pioneers. Not only did Mayall select the 22 songs for the disc, but he also wrote the liner notes in which he recalls his life-altering discovery of this music by hunting down used 78s back in the early ’50s. The lineup Mayall chose speaks for itself. Not only does he pay tribute to the professors of boogie-woogie, but also a cross reference of blues pianists recorded between 1928 and 1960, none of which are represented by more than one track, serving the listener with a full scope of variations in style. ~ Al Campbell, Rovi Performers: Abe Bolar – String Bass; J. Montessori and Early Childhood

Montessori and Early Childhood

$45

Early childhood education across the world has been influenced by the pioneering work of Maria Montessori, and this book provides a complete overview of Montessori pedagogy and practice. It considers the Montessori approach within the context of early childhood education and care, and examines it in the light of new insights from the fields of neuroscience and child development. By helping the reader understand the influence of Montessori on contemporary early years policy and practice, the book outlines ideas relevant to all early years settings, and suggests ways for all early childhood educators to apply these ideas in practice. The book looks in detail at: – the Montessori story – the child as worker and the adult as observer – developing independence and concentration – using the senses to build the foundations for learning – early communication and language – early mathematics – cultural knowledge and understanding – Maria Montessori, and other early childhood pioneers. Within each chapter are definitions of the key concepts of the Montessori approach, questions for reflection and discussion, activities and suggestions for further reading. This book focuses on the 3 to 6 age range. Susan Feez is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of New England, Armidale, Australia.

First Love: A Historical Gathering of Jesus Music’s Pioneers [2 Discs]

$29.71

Late sixties and early seventies America saw the blossoming of the “Jesus movement.” In this social trend, hippies who had embraced the “free love” and “everyone is good at heart” philosophies chucked these ideas in the wake of Altamount, Kent State, and other catastrophes that brought the Decade of Love to a bitter end, and threatened to impart crushing pessimism. In lieu of becoming cynics, the one-time activists sustained their hope by becoming born-again Christians. Meanwhile, a number of gifted Christian musicians virtually invented CCM {(\Contemporary Christian Music)} and found a broad audience from those in the Jesus movement, who had gone through such a dramatic spiritual and political transformation. Among the early CCM performers were Andrae Crouch, Keith Green, and Randy Stonehill. The home release First Love: A Historic Gathering of Jesus Music Pioneers waxes nostalgic, traveling back to this era for a stunning combination of rare archival performance footage by – and exclusive interviews with – the founding fathers of CCM. Appearing in performances on this release are: Love Song, Barry McGuire, Randy Stonehill, Andrae Crouch, Terry Clark, Honeytree, Melody Green – in a tribute to her husband Keith – and many others. Those interviewed include the luminaries Pastor Chuck Smith, Pat Boone, guitarist Phil Keaggy, music producer Michael Omartian, to name only a select few. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Published from 1967 to 1969 in seven limited mimeographed editions, 0 to 9 was edited by artist Vito Acconci and poet Bernadette Mayer. Seeking to explore the relationship between language and the page, Mayer and Acconci brought together the pioneers of 1960s experimental poetry and conceptual art. A Century of Graphic Design: Graphic Design Pioneers of the 20th Century

A Century of Graphic Design: Graphic Design Pioneers of the 20th Century

$184.67

The twentieth century was a landmark era in graphic design, the art that combines words with graphic images on posters, book and magazine covers, record jackets, billboards, and other print advertising and publicity media. This visually magnificent and factually informative volume tells the story of graphic design, then gives separate illustrated thumbnail biographies of more than 100 of the most influential and internationally known designers of the past 100 years. From the century’s early decades we find artists’ profiles and reproductions from the studios of Peter Behrens, Alexander Rodchenko, the Bauhaus, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, a sampling of Art Deco, and much more. Examples of Mid-Century Modern include Lester Beall, Yusaku Kamekura, and jazz record covers from various sources. The Pop and Alternative Art eras gave us psychedelic graphics, militant socialist posters from Cuba, and the dramatic typographic designs of Herb Lubalin. Design in the Digital Era has included work by David Carson, Javier Mariscal, Eiko Ishioka, and many others. All illustrations are perfectly reproduced on high quality paper. The text was written by Jeremy Aynsley, an internationally recognized authority in the art of graphic design. Approximately 450 brilliant full-color photos and illustrations.

A Chinaman’s Chance: The Chinese on the Rocky Mountain Mining Frontier

$17.48

Used – Writers and historians have traditionally portrayed Chinese immigrants in the nineteenth-century American West as victims. For them, the American frontier was a place that offered no more than “a Chinaman’s chance”. By examining the early history of the Boise Basin, Idaho, Liping Zhu challenges the stereotypical image of the Chinese pioneers. Looking at various positive aspects of their experience, he takes an entirely new approach to the study of this ethnic minority.Between 1863 and 191

A Female Economy analyses a hundred years of women’s work in Manitoba from the province’s entry into Confederation in 1870 to the publication of the Report of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in 1970. Mary Kinnear shows that, whether women were working in the household or on a farm for no direct monetary reward or working for wages in the industrial, service, and professional sectors, their work was undervalued.Kinnear details how ordinary women — including early pioneers, East European immigrants, Native women, and professional women — lived and what they thought of the world of work, often telling their stories in their own words. She highlights the cultural and economic expectations for women and juxtaposes the activities society deemed suitable for women with what they actually did. Kinnear argues that a host of factors, such as class and ethnicity, differentiated their choices but that these women shared many common experiences. While women’s own views furnish the main theme, A Female Economy contributes to a developing debate in feminist economics. By focusing on women’s experiences in the sexually segregated economy of a Canadian province at the geographic centre of Canada, Kinnear furnishes a paradigm for women’s economic activity in most western industrializing societies at the time.

A Great Feast of Light: Growing Up Irish in the Television Age

A Great Feast of Light: Growing Up Irish in the Television Age

$15.95

There was no sex in Ireland before television. –Irish MP Oliver J. Flanagan, in the early 1960s The Globe and Mail’s celebrated critic John Doyle was born in the small Irish town of Nenagh in 1957; his father purchased the family’s first television set in 1962. By day, John was schooled by the Christian brothers in the valour of Irish rebel heroes and the saintliness of Catholic martyrs. But in the evenings, television conveyed more subversive messages: American westerns suggested to a bookish young John a model of manhood that had nothing to do with the rigid boundaries of small-town Ireland; and The Late Late Show, Ireland’s homegrown talk-show-cum-variety-program, brought sex into Irish living rooms, eliciting howls of protest from priests and conservative politicians. As the 1960s and 70s wore on, television introduced the dreams and the actions of the American civil rights movement to Ireland. When the Catholics of Ulster adopted the practices of marching and peaceful protest, television transmitted their clashes with the police, and later with the British army, directly into the Doyles’ home — and broadcast them far beyond as well. It pointed John in the direction of a wider world, inspiring his hopes for the future just as it yanked Ireland out of its past.Funny, insightful, and always engaging, this illuminating story of a boy and a country transformed by television is indeed a great feast of light. Unknown to me, on that night there were other forces, unseen, in the air. The Irish Television Authority was already at work, silently sending out signals from a transmitter at Kipurre in the Dublin Mountains. Throughout the country, pioneers and eccentricswere attaching aerials to their roofs and chimneys. In shops where televisions were ready for purchase, a set was occasionally, optimistically turned on to see if there was a signal. Later that mild summer of 1961, an electrical engineer in Limerick, fifteen miles from my backyard,

Along the Maysville Road: The Early Republic in the Trans-Appalachian West

Along the Maysville Road: The Early Republic in the Trans-Appalachian West

$139.69

Before the National Road and the Erie Canal, another transportation revolution was underway in the United States. Beginning in the 1770s, the Maysville Road–a sixty-five-mile dirt trail that stretched from the Ohio River to the Bluegrass region of Kentucky–served as a stage upon which people wrestled with issues of power, identities, and worldviews. For six decades, the road provided a conduit through which political, economic, social, and cultural ideas circulated into and within the early American West. Andrew Jackson brought the trail to national attention when he vetoed Henry Clay’s Maysville Road Bill in 1830. As an important migration route and the center of an early urban corridor, however, the Maysville Road had already made its mark on American history, offering a focal point for the cultural reconfiguration of the Early American Republic. Some of the era’s most important events rumbled along its length as the road witnessed the rise of republicanism, democracy, urban development, refinement, an awakening middle class, revivalism, racial slavery, and nationalism. Along the Maysville Road details the life of the trial from its beginnings as a buffalo trace, through its role in populating and transforming an early American West, to its decline in regional and national affairs. This biography of a road thus serves as a micro-history of social and cultural change in the Early American Republic. Integral to this story are the people and groups who traveled and settled along the road: backcountry pioneers, refined Virginia gentry, poor and middling farmers, artisans and merchants from eastern cities, and of course the women and slaves who arrived with them. While these groupsimported differing worldviews into the new American West, the merchant class’s commitment to commercial development, material acquisition, and individual achievement prophesied the triumph of a liberal economic order throughout nineteenth-century America. Alongside this individualistic impu

American Drama Since 1960: A Critical History

Used – In the early 1960s two leaders of the New York performance group Living Theatre were asked to define its purpose. In this survey of contemporary American drama, Matthew C. Roudane argues that the response of these two pioneers in experimental theater – Julian Beck and Judith Malina – goes a long way toward explaining the purpose of all of the rich and varied dramas to appear on the stage since 1960: “To increase conscious awareness, to stress the sacredness of life, to break down the wall

On the East Coast, early in the 20th century, this spirit of innovation was captured by Charles Ives (whose music lay virtually ignored and unperformed until the world caught up with him, 40 years later). On the West Coast, Henry Cowell and John Cage encountered critical resistance. The Americans invented a new musical language, seeki

They ate garlic and didn”t always bathe; they listened to Wagner and worshiped Diaghilev; they sent their children to coeducational schools, explored homosexuality and free love, vegetarianism and Post-impressionism. They were often drunk and broke, sometimes hungry, but they were of a rebellious spirit. Inhabiting the same England with Philistines and Puritans, this parallel minority of moral pioneers lived in a world of faulty fireplaces, bounced checks, blocked drains, whooping cough, and incontinent cats. They were the bohemians. Virginia Nicholson — the granddaughter of painter Vanessa Bell and the great-niece of Virginia Woolf — explores the subversive, eccentric, and flamboyant artistic community of the early twentieth century in this wonderfully researched and colorful composite portrait of an enigmatic world whose members, because they lived by no rules, are difficult to characterize (San Francisco Chronicle).

Anthology of American Folk Music, Vol. 1-3

Anthology of American Folk Music, Vol. 1-3

$84.98

Originally released in 1952 as a quasi-legal set of three double LPs and reissued several times since (with varying cover art), Anthology of American Folk Music could well be the most influential document of the ’50s folk revival. Many of the recordings that appeared on it had languished in obscurity for 20 years, and it proved a revelation to a new group of folkies, from Pete Seeger to John Fahey to Bob Dylan. The man that made the Anthology possible was Harry Smith, a notoriously eccentric musicologist who compiled 84 of his favorite hillbilly, gospel, blues, and Cajun performances from the late ’20s and early ’30s, dividing each into one of three categories: Ballads, Social Music, and Songs. Smith sequenced the three volumes with a great amount of care, placing songs on the Ballads volume in historical order (not to be confused with chronological order) so as to create an LP that traces the folk tradition, beginning with some of the earliest Childe ballads of the British Isles and ending with several story songs of the early 20th century. The cast of artists includes pioneers in several fields, from the Carter Family and Uncle Dave Macon to Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississippi John Hurt, and the Alabama Sacred Harp Singers. Many of the most interesting selections on the Anthology, however, are taken from artists even more obscure, such as Clarence Ashley, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, and Buell Kazee. After the Anthology had been out of print for more than a decade, Smithsonian/Folkways reissued the set in a six-disc boxed set, with the original notes of Harry Smith, as well as a separate book of new reminiscences by artists influenced by the original and a wealth of material for use in CD-ROM drives. ~ John Bush, Rovi
