The Store $7.99 In a small Arizona town, a man counts his blessings: a loving wife, two teenage daughters, and a job that allows him to work at home. Then “The Store” announces plans to open a local outlet, which will surely finish off the small downtown shops. His concerns grow when “The Store?s” builders ignore all the town?s zoning laws during its construction. Then dead animals are found on “The Store?s” grounds. Inside, customers are hounded by obnoxious sales people, and strange products appear on the shelves. Before long the town?s remaining small shop owners disappear, and “The Store” spreads its influence to the city council and the police force, taking over the town! It?s up to one man to confront “The Store?s” mysterious owner and to save his community, his family, and his life! |

Dollar Store $10.17 It’s difficult for listeners to know exactly what kind of music they’ll hear when they check out a new alternative country band. Honky tonk? Classic rock? Old-time country? Fronted by Dean Schlabowske of the Waco Brothers and Wreck, Dollar Store draws from a handful of subcategories to create a lively mix of rocking guitars, pedal steel, and socially with-it lyrics. The self-titled album kicks off with an angry rocker titled “New Country,” a song that describes the false hope of anyone arriving in America with dreams of doing well and fitting in. The nice thing here and elsewhere on Dollar Store is that even though the lyric has a message, it never gets in the way of the music. Guitarist/vocalist Schlabowske, drummer Joe Camarillo, and bassist Alan Doughty give the impression of a bunch of guys jamming in their garage just for fun. The Dollar Store regulars are joined by a few guests, including Jon Rauhouse on pedal steel, Dave Alvin on guitar, and Celine on fiddle and mandolin. What’s really cool is when all of these odds and ends come together, as in “Around the Bend,” with steel guitar and fiddle inserting themselves into a rock format. The end result, whether one calls it thrash-country or country-punk, is brash and spunky. Dollar Store is the rare combo of music that connects on an emotional level while still sounding smart. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr., Rovi Performers: Celine – Lap Steel Guitar, Mandolin, Fiddle, Guitar, Guitar (Baritone); Jon Rauhouse – Hawaiian Guitar, Pedal Steel, Banjo; Alan Doughty – Vocals (Background), Bass; Dave Alvin – Guitar; Joe Camarillo – Vocals (Background), Drums; Tex Schmidt – Guitar |

The Perfect Store $9.99 When Pierre Omidyar launched a clunky website from a spare bedroom over Labor Day weekend of 1995, he wanted to see if he could use the Internet to create a perfect market. He never guessed his old-computer-parts and Beanie Baby exchange would revolutionize the world of commerce. Now, Adam Cohen, the only journalist ever to get full access to the company, tells the remarkable story of eBay’s rise. He describes how eBay built the most passionate community ever to form in cyberspace and forged a business that triumphed over larger, better-funded rivals. And he explores the ever-widening array of enlistees in the eBay revolution, from a stay-at-home mom who had to rent a warehouse for her thriving business selling bubble-wrap on eBay to the young MBA who started eBay Motors (which within months of its launch was on track to sell $1 billion in cars a year), to collectors nervously bidding thousands of dollars on antique clothing-irons. Adam Cohen’s fascinating look inside eBay is essential reading for anyone trying to figure out what’s next. If you want to truly understand the Internet economy, “The Perfect Store” is indispensable. |

Party Store $17.58 Mick Collins’ love of Detroit techno may come as a surprise to those who know him only as the guitar-strangling frontman of the Dirtbombs, but coming of age as he did in Detroit, it was hard not to be swept up in the sounds coming out of the clubs and filling the bins in local record stores. Men like Derrick May, Juan Atkins, and Kevin Saunderson were heroes to a generation of Detroit music fans, and Collins was no exception. Much like the Dirtbombs’ Ultraglide in Black album paid tribute to the soul and R&B heroes of Collins’ youth, Party Store pays tribute to the techno pioneers of Detroit. Hearing this, the first question you might have is how can the thundering and raw lineup of two drummers, two bassists, and Collins’ scorching guitar do justice to, say, “Strings of Life?” The answer is pretty simple. The band pretty much plays the hell out of everything as usual and it works like a charm. They rip through the Cybotron anthems “Cosmic Cars” and “Alleys of Your Mind” like they were old Pebbles tracks (the only giveaway being Collins’ robotic vocal delivery), charge through the Aztec Mystic’s “Jaguar” like it was an old blues-rocker (though they add a pulsing disco beat and some drum machine), and give Inner City’s “Good Life” an energetic kick in the pants (and thanks to some wonderfully janky-sounding guitar work by Collins). Elsewhere, they turn Carl Craig’s “Bug in the Bass Bin” into a 20-plus-minute epic of noise, drum duals, and spooky atmosphere (and keyboards from Craig himself), shout and wail through a too-brief version of DJ Assault’s “Tear the Club Up,” and give Derrick May’s “Strings of Life” a no wave disco makeover that loses the melody but adds some lo-fi kick. Apart from “Good Life,” which features some truly great vocals from Collins and bassist Ko Melina, and could be a breakout hit for the Dirtbombs, the album’s highlight is their take on A Number of Names’ weirdo electro-pop song “Sharivari.” The band dials the intensity way down and slinks through the groove like a well-tuned disco machine, Collins appropriating the cornball French accent of the original and the guitars laying back, only to leap out in brief bursts of fuzz. It’s a genius cover and the one track that almost tops the original. Collins wasn’t looking to top anything, though, just honor the innovators and the city that spawned them, and Party Store does it with scuzzy style. It’s easy to guess that most of the guys paid tribute to here wouldn’t know what to make of the tracks, but if anything here leads the average garage rock-loving Dirtbombs fan back to the sounds of Detroit techno, the album will have done its job. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi |

Candy Store $10.17 True to the cute, winking title of her Heads Up debut, the glamorous and funky Dutch sax superstar offers a tasty little bagful of everything to please the funky, smooth, and exotic taste buds of jazz and R&B fans around the world. There’s feisty, blistering jamming with multiple horn textures and jangling guitars (the sizzling opening track “Candy”), easy grooving, melodic old-school soul (“L.A. Citylights”), raw and thumping, brassy party singalongs (“Music = Love,” the buoyant and breezy “Summertime”), and even a scorching Latin/Caribbean island dance-along (“La Cabana”) and a jaunt to Jamaica (the jumpy, lilting “Smokin’ Gun”). Dulfer’s always had a little of that classic David Sanborn touch in her sound, and that inspiration shines through on the low-key, late-night vibing of “11:58,” one of a few rich ballads here. The dreamy ’70s jazz-soul trip “Soulsax” draws the listener back, ever so subtly, to the Earth, Wind & Fire style of balladeering. All of these add up to a truly inspired and energized date that gloriously brings Dulfer back to the hard hitting, emotionally compelling magic she achieved on her second album, 1993′s Sax-A-Go-Go. She’d been a consistent hitmaker since then, but was never quite as freewheeling and playful as she was in the early days. In the intervening years, Dulfer developed from a strong natural pop player into a true jazz stylist and improviser, and the maturity shines through even as the party continues. Best of all, she thankfully pulls 180 degrees away from the over the top electronic production of 2003′s Right in My Soul, a disc that, although meaning well, covered her rich R&B and jazz heart with too much machinery. While Dulfer collaborates with longtime partners Thomas Bank and Ulco Bed, keyboardist, bassist, and vocalist Chance Howard — a longtime member of Prince’s band — adds an extra charge to the mix with the same bounce and fire that he added to her live performances in the early 2000s. Candy Store was easily one of contemporary jazz’s finest and funkiest releases of 2007. [This version of Candy Store includes the bonus track "Finsbury Park, Cafe 67 (2007 Version)."] ~ Jonathan Widran, Rovi Performers: Candy Dulfer – Vocals (Background), Fender Rhodes, Sax (Tenor), Sax (Baritone), Sax (Alto), Vocals; Thomas Bank – Fender Rhodes, Keyboards; Jan Van Duikeren – Trumpet; John Blackwell – Drums; Manuel Hugas – Bass; Ulco Bed – Bass, Guitar |

Whiskey Store $14.38 The first summit meeting for these two journeymen roots-blues-rock guitarists is a rousing triumph. On paper, Tab Benoit’s less aggressive New Orleans style wouldn’t seem to mesh with Jimmy Thackery’s boozy, tough, rough and tumble approach. But like Lennon and McCartney, each complements the other. Benoit lets his Delta and Texas-styled roots seep into the proceedings, tempering Thackery’s more bombastic leads. Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Double Trouble rhythm section and keyboardist Reese Wynans provide dexterous support, as does ace harp master Charlie Musselwhite. Most importantly, this isn’t just a bunch of songs built around endless jams. The selections are mostly covers, but the wide range of writers involved — from Bob Dylan, the Stones, and Neil Young to obscurities from legends like Percy Mayfield and Eddie Jones — shows the scope of the guitarists’ influences. Only on the Benoit-penned slow blues “Nice and Warm” — reprised from his solo debut and at almost eight minutes the album’s longest track — do the guitar pyrotechnics overwhelm the song. But even here, the musicians are obviously inspired by each other and deliver dazzling solos, each more jaw-dropping than the last. Everything sizzles, yet a mid-album detour into a laid-back version of Neil Young’s country-ish ballad “Unknown Legend” works surprisingly well, especially with Musselwhite’s poignant harp solo. Jagger/Richards’ “The Last Time” gets a rootsy rave-up treatment, as does Dylan’s “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat,” and the duo clicks into shuffle mode on Thackery’s instrumental Freddie King tribute, “Freddy’s Combo.” For the most part, the over the top guitar shenanigans this partnership threatens thankfully never materialize, with both six-string benders providing short, succinct, yet scorching solos within the framework of the tunes. Lead vocals are shared, although Benoit is clearly the better singer, with Thackery’s rasp getting by on sheer enthusiasm. A treat for fans of both artists as well as a stirring contemporary electric blues album by any yardstick, Whiskey Store successfully joins two gifted guitarists in a session that proves greater than the sum of its very talented parts. ~ Hal Horowitz, Rovi Performers: Charlie Musselwhite – Harmonica; Chris Layton – Drums; Jimmy Thackery – Vocals, Guitar; Reese Wynans – Organ (Hammond), Piano; Tab Benoit – Vocals, Guitar; Tommy Shannon – Bass |
