On the Rock $14.39 On the Rock continues along the lines of the more recent Andrés Calamaro releases, such as El Palacio de las Flores and La Lengua Popular. These albums are nothing more and nothing less than collections of typical Calamaro songs –and by his own standards, they’re fairly restrained at that. As such, they stand equally apart from his genre tributes (the tango album Tinta Roja) or his more daring excesses (the five-CD set El Salmón). In the 12 tracks of On the Rock, Calamaro once again displays his effortless knack for writing pop songs in a variety of styles, indiscriminately picking — and often intertwining — from the musical traditions of Argentina, Mexico, Spain, and the United States, to name the most recurrent ones. Backed by his trusted road band of Candy Caramelo (who also co-produces), José “Niño” Bruno, and Diego García, a lot of On the Rock sounds like Calamaro on cruise control, as he revisits or repeats topics, arrangements, and melodies that will seem immediately familiar to Calamaro’s fans. Novelty comes only from the surprisingly substantial number of collaborations, as one-third of the tracks feature guest vocalists. Furthermore, three of these are rather high profile: the exceptional flamenco cantor “El Cigala,” and his guitarist Josuele on the opener “El Barco” (arguably the album’s finest moment), reggaeton rapper Calle 13 adding venom to the bolero “Insoportablente Cruel,” and Spanish rock legend Enrique Bunbury on “Te Solté la Rienda,” a cover of master of ranchera José Alfredo Jiménez. The rest of the album includes a pretty good but still not great trademark Calamaro single “Los Divinos,” a moving late-night ballad “Todos se Van,” and a few accelerated numbers that may sound incomprehensible to those unfamiliar with Argentina’s culture, politics, and/or linguistic idiosyncracies. Ultimately, while On the Rock provides another good example of Calamaro’s famous songwriting facility and engaging voice, it lacks the aesthetic focus of his greatest solo achievements such as Alta Suciedad or Nadie Sale Vivo de Aquí. On the Rock was released in several different formats, including vinyl and a bonus-cd edition with alternate versions. As is often the case with Calamaro, however, sometimes less is more. Rock ‘n’ Roll Band $12.72 The acid test for a jam band is, of course, the live album, and San Francisco-based quartet Tea Leaf Green bill this one as their first “official” concert recording, disavowing an earlier self-released effort. The disc is also billed as the soundtrack to an identically titled and simultaneously released documentary film on DVD directed by Justin Kreutzmann (son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann). The movie captures the band’s performance on May 19, 2006, at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO, interspersed with interview footage shot back home in San Francisco. Many jam bands try to discount their roots in ’60s psychedelic rock, but the members of Tea Leaf Green are unabashed about extolling their taste for it and for the ’70s classic rock that grew out of it. Their music is reminiscent of the Dead, with certain caveats. They are one guitarist and one drummer short of the earlier band’s instrumentation, which leads to greater prominence for keyboardist Trevor Garrod, and their rhythm section is more inclined toward R&B and funk than the Dead’s. Also, there is little of the Dead’s country music background in Tea Leaf Green. But Garrod, who is also the lead singer, has a light tenor often reminiscent of Jerry Garcia’s, and the jamming, despite revealing a knowledge of both the Allman Brothers Band and Weather Report, suggests the Dead, too. Garrod’s lyrics are full of nature imagery and vague philosophizing, with a hint of religion (two songs here mention the Devil in the titles), his primary influence naturally being the Dead’s Robert Hunter. Unlike many bands, they held out recycling their work in a series of budget-line collections, granting only a two-fer release of their first two albums in 1983. Things changed once Greatest Hits was released in 1997, since its release guaranteed the eventual appearance of records like Sony Music Special Products’ Rock and Roll Band, a budget-line compilation of highlights from the first two albums. Rock N Roll Band [DVD] $15.18 The acid test for a jam band is, of course, the live album, and San Francisco-based quartet Tea Leaf Green bill this one as their first “official” concert recording, disavowing an earlier self-released effort. The disc is also billed as the soundtrack to an identically titled and simultaneously released documentary film on DVD directed by Justin Kreutzmann (son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann). The movie captures the band’s performance on May 19, 2006, at the Fox Theater in Boulder, CO, interspersed with interview footage shot back home in San Francisco. Many jam bands try to discount their roots in ’60s psychedelic rock, but the members of Tea Leaf Green are unabashed about extolling their taste for it and for the ’70s classic rock that grew out of it. Their music is reminiscent of the Dead, with certain caveats. They are one guitarist and one drummer short of the earlier band’s instrumentation, which leads to greater prominence for keyboardist Trevor Garrod, and their rhythm section is more inclined toward R&B and funk than the Dead’s. Also, there is little of the Dead’s country music background in Tea Leaf Green. But Garrod, who is also the lead singer, has a light tenor often reminiscent of Jerry Garcia’s, and the jamming, despite revealing a knowledge of both the Allman Brothers Band and Weather Report, suggests the Dead, too. Garrod’s lyrics are full of nature imagery and vague philosophizing, with a hint of religion (two songs here mention the Devil in the titles), his primary influence naturally being the Dead’s Robert Hunter. But the words are less important than the group’s interplay on this date, and that interplay is infectious enough to please any jam band fan. #1 Hits Explosion $15.98 If the Apples in Stereo had only made Fun Trick Noisemaker and then quit, their legacy as a legendary pop group would have been secure. In 1995, nobody else was making records as giddy or as full of wonder as the Apples, and definitely no one was making records as exquisitely arranged and magical on a shoestring budget. The release of Fun Trick was a defining moment in indie rock that came pretty close to being a lo-fi pop masterpiece, and still sounds just as amazing. That the Apples couldn’t top it is no cause for shame on their part; that they kept trying and ended up creating a catalog as rich in great songs and records is cause for celebration. The cheekily titled #1 Hits Explosion is just the kind of career-summing package the band deserves and it makes clear just how wonderful a band it is. Gathering songs in roughly equal numbers from all six of their studio albums (and adding the infectious rocker “Signal in the Sky [Let's Go]” that they recorded for The Powerpuff Girls’ Heroes & Villains soundtrack), the collection focuses mostly on the ultra-hooky, power pop-influenced side of the band. Starting with the booming rocker “Energy” from their most recent record, New Magnetic Wonder, the songs fly past like gooey sticks of bubblegum, glowing and shimmering like the finest pop music of the ’60s and ’70s. “The Rainbow,” “Go,” “Shine a Light,” and “Ruby” (just to pick four) could have easily been hits in 1967 given the right circumstances, “Shine a Light” sounds like a low-budget ELO, and there’s absolutely no reason “Signal in the Sky” wasn’t topping the charts in 2000. Only “Strawberry Fire” and “20 Cases Suggestive Of…” hint at the trippy, hazily psychedelic side of the group, but even then the hooks in the choruses are strong enough that you could hang a cement overcoat from them with no problem. ’89 Live in Japan $9.99 Sometime in 1992/1993 a revamped Quiet Riot featuring vocalist Kevin DuBrow with Bob Rondinelli on drums (around this time Rondinelli had also filled in on an Aerosmith gig one night when Joey Kramer wasn’t available — call him Mr. Fill-In) performed at a little-known club in Billerica, Massachusetts called Mr. Tipps. It is one of those suburban gigs we call “the last rung on the rock & roll ladder” and it’s a pity because Quiet Riot had more than just a clever name, and more than the cachet of being the professional birthplace of guitar wizard Randy Rhodes. To those who don’t know the story, DuBrow faced a mutiny by the band he founded and Pasha Records released an album in 1988 with two different members, titling the disc, interestingly enough, after the first Japanese release by the original group. This DVD, ’89 Live in Japan, comes from that strange lineup in between and features vocalist Paul Shortino of the group Rough Cutt as well as bassist Sean McNabb and an uncredited Jimmy Waldo — keyboard player from the groups New England and Alcatraz. Why Waldo is treated like a hired hand is one of those unique situations which seemed to develop after Flo & Eddie called Mountain’s organ player Steve Knight “the most useless man in rock & roll.” The statement was far from accurate, of course, but it was humorous and Mott the Hoople and Aerosmith would both push keyboardists to the side and pretty much off-stage after that infamous quip. Though the 1988 self-titled Quiet Riot album faced horrible reviews and little or no commercial acceptance, this DVD is actually quite enjoyable. As a live band, Q.R. had that long-hair-’80s-thing down pat. (I’m) Stranded [Australia Bonus Tracks] $19.98 The Saints were to Australia what the Sex Pistols were to Britain and the Ramones to America. Picking up the germ planted by the defunct Stooges, MC5, Velvet Underground, and New York Dolls, the Saints sparked the Far East punk rock movement with a blasting, blistering, scorching sound no one had heard before. Moreover, the Saints were blitzing the unsuspecting in their home of Brisbane in 1973, long before the Sex Pistols or the Ramones had even begun. Australians today hold the Saints in greater reverence than any rock band in its history, save for the Easybeats. After their incendiary, self-released debut 7″ single “(I’m) Stranded” b/w “No Time” blew minds of a raving British press on import in 1976, subsequent sales of the single proved to the industry that the upstart punk movement was in fact commercially viable. The Saints pocketed a worldwide deal with EMI Australia, who rush-released “(I’m) Stranded” in Australia and Britain (and in the U.S., on the heavyweight punk label of the time, Sire Records) to capitalize on the new trend. This first LP was actually nothing but eight rough-and-raw demo tracks the band had no intention of releasing, plus the two sides of the much better, cleaner-sounding single. The heavy, buzzing racket on the eight demo tracks borders on unintelligible, they’re so cheaply recorded, but nothing can stop a collection of cracklers this intense, with two absolutely astounding, blues-heavy ballads thrown in for great balance — “Messin’ with the Kid” and “Story of Love” drip with genuine, bratty soul. Of the hard-fast tracks, even today’s punk fans are amazed at the sheer tenacity and outright fire of “Nights in Venice,” “One Way Street,” and “Erotic Neurotic.” Hear history burning. … and His Mother Called Him Bill [France Bonus Tracks] $10.98 When Billy Strayhorn died of cancer in 1967, Duke Ellington was devastated. His closest friend and arranger had left his life full of music and memories. As a tribute, Ellington and his orchestra almost immediately began recording a tribute to Strayhorn, using the late arranger’s own compositions and charts. The album features well-known and previously unrecorded Strayhorn tunes that showcased his range, versatility, and, above all, the quality that Ellington admired him most for: his sensitivity to all of the timbral, tonal, and color possibilities an orchestra could bring to a piece of music. The set opens with a vehicle for Johnny Hodges called “Snibor,” written in 1949. A loose blues tune, its intervals showcase Hodges against a stinging I-IV-V backdrop and turnaround, with a sweeping set of colors in the brass section before Cootie Williams takes a break and hands it back to Hodges to take out. The melancholy “Blood Count” was written in 1967 for the band’s Carnegie Hall concert. It proved to be his final composition and chart. Hodges again gets the call and blows deep, low, and full of sadness and even anger. The music is moody, poignant, and full of poise, expressing a wide range of feelings as memories from different periods in the composers’ and bandleaders’ collective careers. Given all the works Strayhorn composed, this one — with its muted trumpet section set in fours against Hodges’ blues wailing — is both wistful and chilling. Also included here is a remake of 1951′s “Rock Skippin’ at the Blue Note,” in a spicy, funky version with a shimmering cymbal ride from Sam Woodyard and a punched up, bleating Cootie Williams solo as well as one from Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet, smoothing out the harmonic edges of the brass section (which features a ringing break from John Sanders). In cut time, the tune shuffles in the groove with Ellington accenting on every eight as the brass and reeds mix it up joyously. There are two versions of “Lotus Blossom.” … |

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead $10.98 Labeled as “anti-musicians,” named after a prayer to Mayan corn gods, and cause for press releases describing it as “set upon by rednecks,” …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead vies for that piece of scarred, post-punk real estate somewhere between the Who and chucking a whirring blender full of bolts straight into a jet engine. With this self-titled debut, the band will probably horrify the realtors. From moments of diversionary electronic tweaks to ones of shambolic, guitar-thrashed screeches (and sometimes both), the album realizes the importance of not trying to be important. The sound of bashing out unconventional “we hate something that we’ll make sure to mumble” punk rock without parroting any one musical thing is what — if anything — ties these eight songs together. And for good reason. Few bands can sound like such a rightful mess. The band has been lumped in with fellow rock unapologists Queens of the Stone Age and At the Drive-In, but this self-titled debut album is a caustic, fidgety yelp that almost belies its out-and-out intelligence. …Live in Chicago $18.98 Two albums in is a little bit quick for a live album from Panic at the Disco, but in a strange way …Live in Chicago comes at a good time for the quartet, as its 2008 album was such a studio-created salute to the Beatles that it raised the question as to whether the band could pull it off on-stage. Turns out, this live set — available as almost any live album is in a CD/DVD package featuring the full set as a CD and a DVD for a home theater — proves that they can, albeit not quite as beguilingly as they do in the confines of the studio. The absurd grandeur of Pretty. Odd is replaced with a nervy but clean energy more reminiscent of their debut, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, with those songs given more of a professional punch than they had on record. So, the young band is still feeling its way, but the surprising thing about …Live in Chicago is that Panic at the Disco sound tight, melodic, and big, capable of filling a large stage. They still could rock just a bit harder, but Pretty. Odd suggests that they’re becoming that rare thing in 2008: a pop-oriented rock band. …Tick…Tick…Tick $15.98 Songwriter Steve Wynn, the former Dream Syndicate frontman, has been on a tear since 1996 when he offered Melting in the Dark. Since then, his records have featured howling, wailing rock & roll and deep, dark acoustic reflections — all of them bearing his trademark noir-ish lyrics that offer the shadowy side of life, love, and violence. He’s employed a variety of musicians, and they’ve always sounded like hired guns. On …Tick…Tick…Tick he’s got himself a real band. They’re all younger than he is, and they have the hunger it takes to really execute Wynn’s unique songs. Start with drummer Linda Pitmon, who acts as co-producer (along with Wynn and Craig Schumacher) on these sides. Add to this the fact that the entire band (including Dave DeCastro on bass and guitarist Jason Victor) plots the arrangements. Wynn’s willful loss of total control has benefited him in spades. The set jumps out of the gate howling with “Wired,” where it sounds as if Wynn is singing through a megaphone. It’s followed by the creepy rocker “Cindy, It Was Always You,” co-written with ? ber hard-boiled crime fiction novelist George Pelecanos. On “Killing Me,” Wynn employs Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love?” guitar riff and mutates it into something utterly unhinged. The shuffle gets moved into overdrive as Victor makes his guitar scream, roar, and squeal while Wynn holds down the rhythm and overdubs a distorted slide. It’s followed by a seemingly simple ballad entitled “The Deep End,” which rises in drama to the breaking point about two thirds of the way through. It’s full of a kind of emptiness and questioning about the experience of loss; it expresses fear at the ensuing emptiness and the apprehension of being in this space. DeCastro’s bass enters about a minute in, and propels the guitars as Pitmon accents every line as if it were the gospel truth — and for the singer, it is.
