Much of the early research on Russian Sign Language was done by Galina Lazarevna Zaitseva, who wrote her 1969 PhD thesis on spatial relationships in Russian Sign Language, and in 1992 devised the now standard term for Russian Sign Language Russkii Zhestovyi Yazyk. Ongoing research into the language takes place at the Centre for Deaf Studies in Moscow. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. American Sign Language Grammar

$65.33

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The grammar of American Sign Language (ASL) is the best studied of any sign language, though research is still in its infancy, dating back only to William Stokoe in the 1960s. Stokoe was the first linguist to approach any sign language as a full natural language with its own grammar, an approach which is now accepted practice for all Deaf sign languages. Stokoes phonological model, for example, has been successfully applied to several other sign languages, such as British Sign Language, which is unrelated to ASL.Stokoe concentrated primarily on establishing the phonology of ASL, calling the building blocks of signs cheremes, from the Greek cheir hand, by analogy with the phonemes and tonemes of oral languages. However, it has since been recognized that these are cognitively equivalent, and linguists since Stokoes time have used the terms phoneme and phonology for all languages, oral and sign. Sign Language in Indo-Pakistan

To find a suitable framework for the description of a previously undocumented language is all the more challenging in the case of a signed language. In this book, for the first time, an indigenous Asian sign language used in deaf communities in India and Pakistan is described on all linguistically relevant levels. This grammatical sketch aims at providing a concise yet comprehensive picture of the language. It covers a substantial part of Indopakistani Sign Language grammar. Topics discussed range from properties of individual signs to principles of discourse organization. Important aspects of morphological structure and syntactic regularities are summarized. Finally, sign language specific grammatical mechanisms such as spatially realized syntax and the use of facial expressions also figure prominently in this book. A 300-word dictionary with graphic representations of signs and a transcribed sample text complement the grammatical description. The cross-linguistic study of signed languages is only just beginning. Descriptive materials such as the ones presented in this book provide the necessary starting point for further empirical and theoretical research in this direction.

Sign

Sign

$92.4

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A sign is an entity which signifies another entity. A natural sign is an entity which bears a causal relation to the signified entity, as thunder is a sign of storm. A conventional sign signifies by agreement, as a full stop signifies the end of a sentence. (Contrast a symbol which stands for another thing, as a flag may be a symbol of a nation) The way in which a sign signifies is a topic in semiotics and philosophy of language, see also Meaning (linguistic). Thus, for example, people may speak of the significance of events, the signification of characters, the meaning of sentences, or the import of a communication. These different relationships that exist between sorts of signs can help people and sorts of things that are signified can be called the modes of signification. The range of uses of signs are varied. They might include: the indication or mark of something, a display of a message, a signal to draw attention, evidence of an underlying cause (for instance, the symptoms of a disease are signs of the disease), a character for a mathematical operation, a body gesture, etc. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. A Framework for Sign Language Recognition

A Framework for Sign Language Recognition

$143.39

This book describes new techniques that can be used in a sign language recognition (SLR) system, and more generally in human gesture systems. Any SLR system consists of three main components: Skin detector, Tracker, and Recognizer. The skin detector is responsible for segmenting skin objects like the face and hands from video frames. The tracker keeps track of the hand location (specifically the bounding box) and detects any occlusions that might happen between any skin objects. Finally, the recognizer tries to classify the performed sign into one of the sign classes in our vocabulary using the set of features and information provided by the tracker. Instead of dealing with the whole sign for recognition, the sign can be broken down into elementary subunits, which are far less in number than the total number of signs in the vocabulary. We propose a novel algorithm to model and segment these subunits, then try to learn the informative combinations of subunits/features using a boosting framework. In brief, This book takes you into a journey and describes all the necessary steps that are needed to recognize the meaning of a performed signs in a video. The AlSayyid Bedouin Sign Language (ABSL) is a sign language used by about 150 Deaf and many hearing members of the alSayyid Bedouin tribe in the Negev desert of southern Israel. As both Deaf and hearing people share a language, Deaf people are not stigmatised in this community, and marriage between Deaf and hearing people is common. The AlSayyid community (as of 2004) numbers around 3,000 in total, most of whom trace their ancestry back to the time the village was founded, in the mid19th century, by a local woman and an Egyptian man. Two of this founding couples five sons carried a gene for nonsyndromic, genetically recessive, profound prelingual neurosensory deafness. The descendants of the founding couple often married their cousins due to the tribes rejection by its neighbours for being foreign fellahin. This meant that the gene became homozygous in several members of the family. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Kaapor Sign Language by Cirino, Zheng [Paperback]

Kaapor Sign Language by Cirino, Zheng [Paperback]

$76.47

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Urub Sign Language is a sign language used by the small community of Kaapor people in the state of Maranh o. Linguist Jim Kakumasu observed in 1968 that the number of deaf people in the community was 7 out of a population of 500. This relatively high ratio of deafness has led to both hearing and deaf members of the community using the language, and most hearing children grow up bilingual in the spoken and signed languages. Other Indian tribes in the region have also been reported to use sign languages. Notable features of Urub Sign Language are its Object Subject Verb word order, and its locating of the past in front of the signer and the future behind, like Japanese Sign Language and in contrast to sign languages of European origin, including American Sign Language, Auslan and New Zealand Sign Language. Kyle and Woll speculate that this is represents a world view of the past as something visible, and the future as unknowable. In looking for clues to the origin and period of a suspended light fixture, one must first evaluate the overall shape and then look for the so-called ?sign language? or details of the ornamentation. Often a fixture today is made up of what isthe best, or most characteristic of varied sources and periods. A fixture such as the Rhyton chandelier would therefore be described as eclectic, a creative assemblage of a variety of parts from the past to create a unique fixture for today, but with anoverall appearance of being historic or traditional. The solid bronze ball at the base with ?S? or ?C? scrolled arms were typical of the Flemish chandeliers of the 16th century. Decorative, draped chains date back to early Byzantine times, and rosettes appeared on early Gothic cathedral ceilings in England. The metal and glass shades resemble the drinking vessels of trumpet and horn shapes dating from Assyrian, Minoan, and Greek civilizations. The love of a gold finish has remained a constant throughout history. The success of such a chandelieris dependent upon the inventiveness of the designer and the ability to beautifully integrate the components of the fixtureand achieve pleasing proportions and visual delight.RHYTON 5LT CHAND – VG

 A Sense of Belonging

A Sense of Belonging

$1.26

The swift and improbable rise of Mel Martinez to the top echelon of America s government began not with a political race but with a burst of gunfire. In April 1958, an eleven-year-old Martinez huddled on his bedroom floor while Cuban soldiers opened fire on insurgents outside his family s home in the normally sleepy town of Sagua la Grande. With that hail of bullets, the idyllic Cuba of his boyhood was shattered. If political unrest made daily life disturbing and at times frightening, Fidel Castro s Communist Revolution nine months later was nothing short of devastating. Martinez s Catholic school was suddenly shuttered as the Communist regime threw priests out of the country. A sixteen-year-old boy from his town was seized and killed by a firing squad. When armed militiamen shouted violent threats at Martinez for wearing a cloth medallion as a sign of his Catholic faith, his parents made a heartrending decision: their son would have to escape the Castro regime alone. Under the greatest secrecy, the Martinez family arranged through a special church program to have Mel airlifted out of Cuba to America. After months of painstaking planning (and a simple mistake that nearly scuttled the entire arrangement), fifteen-year-old Martinez stepped on a plane bound for Miami. He had no idea when or if he would see his family again. A Sense of Belonging is the riveting account of innocence lost, exile sustained by religious faith, and an immigrant s gritty determination to overcome the barriers of language and culture in his adopted homeland. Martinez warmly recalls a bucolic childhood in Cuba, playing baseball, fishing at the beach, and accompanying his father on veterinary visits to neighboring farms. He also vividly recounts the harrowing changes under Castro that forced him to flee, as well as the arduous years he spent in American refugee camps and foster homes. And he captures the sheer joy of being reunited with his family after four years of wrenching separat

 A Theory of Computer Semiotics

A Theory of Computer Semiotics

$141.99

Semiotics is the science of signs: graphical, such as pictures; verbal, writing or sounds; or others such as body gestures and clothes. Computer semiotics studies the special nature of computer-based signs and how they function in use. As computers have become a feature of daily life, work and education, the design of the interface has become of prime importance, so that machines can be used quickly and easily. Systems are more easily learned if the designer takes his or her departure point in the established sign usage of the users, for example, their language, and conscious use of signs in designs improves the benefits and ease of using computers. Introduces basic traditional semiotic concepts and adapts them so that they become useful for analyzing and designing computer systems in their symbolic context of work. It presents a novel approach to the subject, rich in examples, in that it is both theoretically systematic but practical. The author refers to and reinterprets techniques already used so that readers can deepen their understanding. In addition, it offers new techniques and a consistent perspective on computer systems that is particularly appropriate for new hardware and software whose main functions are presentation and communication.
